West Hartford


Ranked by Connecticut Magazine as one of the top ten towns of its size in the state, for its strength of economy, for excellence of town services, for superb schools, for safety and for its educational, leisure- time and cultural offerings, West Hartford is an attractive place where “City Style Meets Village Charm.” This strong suburban community, rooted in the Colonial past, includes an unhurried community center that has been active since the late 1600s. Today serving as the town’s hub, this tree-lined haven includes exceptional shops, stores, coffee shops and superb restaurants with outdoor dining. West Hartford’s 61,000 inhabitants live within 22.2 square miles and are governed by a Town Council and Town Manager.


With exceptionally high-rated public schools, West Hartford has eleven Elementary Schools, two Middle Schools and two High Schools. Seventeen private and parochial schools serve all grades. Also within West Hartford are the campuses of the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut and St. Joseph College. Symphony Orchestra concerts, art galleries, museums and theater events provide year-round cultural activities in West Hartford, with additional activities in neighboring Hartford rounding out an already rich cultural calendar. In keeping with the town’s commitment to excellence, West Hartford’s public library has been ranked first in Connecticut and 17th overall in the entire United States.


View world-famed Elizabeth Park’s horticultural delights; enjoy over thirty miles of paved and gravel roads plus hiking trails within the 3,000 acres of beautiful woodland and trails that comprise the Talcott Mountain Reservoir area; visit the 162-acre Westmoor Park and its demonstration farm, each only part of the superior six-park system in West Hartford. The town’s award-winning recreational facilities also include an indoor ice-skating rink, municipal golf courses, pools, courts for tennis or basketball, playing fields, playgrounds and picnic areas.


State Route 4 is the old trolley route that still provides a scenic thoroughfare from Hartford, through West Hartford, and out to Farmington. There is also quick access to Interstate Routes 84 and 91 making West Hartford an easy destination.
